colors, the east-london party collective has been on a roll as of late, with a spate of successful events that have taken them across europe to berlin, istanbul and barcelona to name a few countries. as the name suggests, each event draws inspiration from the colour spectrum, with guests encouraged to dress up in a different chosen shade each night to get down to a soundtrack influenced by deep house, funk, disco and techno.

in 2011, julia thompson (dj black b1tch) gave me a tdk sa90 tape of a spontaneous live jam by insync recorded in her flat in forest hill, south london in march 1991. she had found it in a drawer when clearing out stuff. she gave it to me to listen to simply thinking i might be interested in hearing it. of course i was, particularly because the date on the tape immediately told me that the session was recorded more than a year before the release of insyncs debut, the seminal storm on irdial discs.

at once foreign and familiar, desert sound colony brilliantly scores a nostalgic journey through the proverbial looking glass. the plaintiff vibe of the way i began envelopes the listener in warm guitar licks and hushed vocals, transporting them to a time when innocence and insecurity gave way to transcendence. the road takes a turn with fire egg, a classic stomper that drives introspection with looping guitar melody and bouncy bass. and before we return to size, iris carries us further inward with scattered claps and a skipping kick, before releasing us into a deep and chugging, eyes-wide-shut, euphoric roller.

accompany the reissue of woo s into the heart of love, emotional rescue is releasing a limited 7inch featuring songs not included on the vinyl pressing, plus a previously unreleased version of the beautiful title song, which only appeared in later form on their cd only, la luna album. with the original into the heart of love album only appearing as a 60 minute cassette-only release, several of the albums songs could not make the first time vinyl issue from emotional rescue. therefore, this limited edition 7inch includes two of those ommited songs. the wistful english folk duet between mark ives and sue amor on make me tea and it s sibling on the album, a little long way. possibly woo s most straight forward folk song, make me tea is as the title imagines a very particular english poem. recording as a duet between two late night lovers, awaking from post-love making slumber to find peace and with it, a nice, perfect cup of tea. however, it is the inclusion of the unreleased version of the title song, magic in the dark that is worth the admission price alone. taken from the cd only album, la luna, the original s short and gentle story of late night love is presented here in it s alternate demo form. a different vantage point is shown in revelation and then exhaltation. the sadder start expands in to a beautiful and wonderus folk celebration. mark s vocals and guitar are later joined by gentle rhythmic percussion from brother clive, before clarinets duet to a yearning finale. woo once again showing their unique mix of folk and new age electronics. a one off to cherish.

following a double headed debut on our recent nasty rips comp. – a crisp remix of hackmans ‘ always’ and a fizzing solo outing -‘not afraid’, montreal producer reagan grey makes her full shifting peaks debut with a high grade 3 track ep, alongside 3 useful remixes. opener ‘owl’ featuring sandy duperval on vocals, takes a neat song of love and life and rolls it over a punchy ukg/house groove, adding classic sounding organ stabs and swingy rhythms, with a tight arrangement keeping things moving along. ‘feel the pressure’ features christie nelson on vocals, with an equally strong , r n’ b inflected song woven in and out of a looser, spacier arrangement, rgs snappy drums again underpin proceedings. not afraid reappears, having made friends along the way via it s nasty rips inclusion thanks to driving detroit-influenced synths, a pulsing bassline and sweet builds and drops. on the remix front, lukas ( future boogie ) keeps things simple on owl, with a fat, kick-lead groove and sparing use of the vox before drifting into a crowd-pleasing breakdown halfway through. benway (aka fast rising muscovite nphonix) takes swathes of the feel the pressure vocal for a ride over broken beats and a bass heavy backing, with hints of techno torque setting his pressurize mix apart from the similar de pressurize version.

to accompany the release of especial s compilation mix cd, -eleccio- - offering of a snapshot of the first 9 eps on the label - a limited edition sampler ep is being released featuring 4 unreleased remixes from the label s roster to date. ever since the first white labels appeared at the end of summer 2013, emotional especial has had a busy release schedule, putting out music that are a slightly warped take on club music. mixing the influences of dub, electro, disco, proto-house, house and techno, a feeling, a sound, a vibe has appeared without any preordained plan. with the release of ees10cd - a dj meets studio compilation mix created by label mainstay and handyman, jamie paton - to mark the end of first series of the label, it was decided to included a couple of specal unreleased remixes to add a bit of new with the old in the mix. to that end this limited edition vinyl sampler was created to include the two remixes, plus the inclusion of another two gems that simply needed to see the light of day. first is the alternative -member- remix of inhalt by black merlin - a strings meets leather bar club-dub-out that takes things deeper and darker than before. this is followed by jamie delivering his own take of khidja s massive mustafa, with a warped, swamped out dub. next is another mix from cage & aviary of their pals, blancemange. brooding low-slung rerub dub anyone? finally there is a very special remix by khidja of the ganges orchestra. reissued on emotional rescue in 2013, this special remix takes the vocal mantra of the original and creates a balearic-raga tale that perfectly rounds off especial to date.

a diverse and damaging three track ep from bone, exploring and exhibiting detroit techno musically, figuratively and spiritually. a1. here to stay (won t fade away) a nod to detroit as an ever-present - a marker by which others are measured, bone s first track on the detroit ep, here to stay (won t fade away) makes a statement above and beyond just being a fine example the music it refers to. the sumptuous melody that opens the track is accompanied by a substantial yet soft, almost warm, kick, a combination that somehow provides an atmosphere and depth way beyond merely the of the sum of its parts. more rolling percussion and drums are crisply ushered in before the here to stay (won t fade away) vocal begins looping over the composition. linear, straight up loops, grooves and rhythm give a consistent sense of railroad-esque motion atop of an ever-present vein of lush synth and melody. a track that is certainly here to stay. a2. detroit is ... soul with more of an emotional focus than symbolic this time, it s clear this one is from bone s heart. detroit is ... soul, ducks and weaves in the grey area between house and techno, the initial percussion that is brushed over the kick giving more of a house swing than a techno groove. the on/off, cut-and-dry synth chords contrast with the looser fluidity in here to stay (won t fade away), and gives a real sense of intent and desire. the real focal point however is the profound vocal that comes swirling over the top, -detroit is what i love, detroit is what i need, detroit is where i m from, detroit s the air i breathe?- no explanation necessary. b. detroit is ... hard bone rounds off part 1 of his detroit ep with aplomb. where the previous two tracks have drawn on the emotional and symbolic significance of detroit as a place and as an ideal, detroit is ... hard, cuts straight to the chase. utilizing the same vocal sample as detroit is ... soul, bone feeds things through the grinder and comes out with a late night dancefloor destroyer that blends millsian fury and red planet mystique with the archetypal subject detroit aesthetic. chaotic arpeggiated melody, indignant claps and breakneck drums and percussion are the chosen company for bone s words on this flipside to detroit is ... soul. detroit is ... hard, undoubtedly to become a mainstay for sweaty after-hours affairs the world over

7eventhirty and gensu dean. rapper and producer. mello music group stalwarts and jackson, mississippi natives turned dallas denizens. their working together was fated, rooted in shared soil before it was written in indelible ink. with 7eventhirtys sophomore album, the problem, the duo have committed their destined collaboration to wax, giving rap listeners an album that wrestles with the rapidly changing present and carves out a much-deserved space in the forever-uncertain future.

the prolific lord of the isles (aka scotlands neil mcdonald) has had a string of stunning 12 inches over the past few years on labels such as permanent vacation, unthank, shevchenko, mule and of course his four track > year of the city ep< on phonica, which was widely acclaimed upon its release in 2012. this time loti presents two long-form tracks, each a mini-masterpiece in itself. the 10 minute plus >greane< bursts into life after an intro of kicks and white noise hi-hats. it continues to slowly build, with pitch-bent synth lines and a pulsing bass-line making way for a melacholic shift in mood. truly original stuff! on the flip, a swirl of synthetic strings introduces ‘gigha’, in a manner that brings to mind rhythm is rhythm’s legendary ‘kao-tic harmony’, before the drums and infectious acid-line join in. over the 8 minutes they continue to interweave and play off each other to dazzling effect. artwork by jack featherstone, the designer of a number of sleeves for border community (including the highly praised campaign behind james holden’s ‘the inheritors’, its singles and live visuals), electric minds, warm and of course, phonica.

harry agius has been making waves as midland since 2010, releasing a series of increasingly impressive 12”s as a solo artist but also collaborating with the likes of ramadanman (pearson sound), breach and pariah on labels such as aus music, naked naked, works the long nights and his own graded imprint. he is also a prolific remixer who has lent his talents to artists such as lone, guy gerber, julio bashmore, dusky and more. we can proudly say he came to many people’s attention via his first phonica 12” ‘play the game’ back in 2010 and he has remained a friend and regular at the shop ever since. midland’s well deserved rise has been a delight to watch from the sidelines and we’re glad to welcome harry back to phonica with the fantastic ‘before we leave’. it starts slowly but surely as reverb soaked percussion comes to the fore, cushioned by the truly beautiful string melody, which we’re sure will be stuck in many a head this year! this could well be midland’s most deftly handled arrangement yet. running back’s gerd janson wisely decides to stick to the original track’s feel, letting the strings weave their magic, yet also brings the bassline and drums to the forefront. delicately but expertly done. midland rounds out the 12” with his barebones drums and percussion-only ‘bonus beats’ version, perfect dj tool material. we wish more records had these!

the anonymous bear and bunny from norway is back with a super secretive 12inch with two never heard before disco edit bangers. this isnt on soundcloud, there will be no digital release, and it will be a strictly limited edition 12inch white label vinyl release.

michael & mattis are based between new york and oslo. maybe thats why their music has such a unique feel. blending the oddness of norwegian labels as sex tags mania and the ongoing musical heritage of nyc in hip-hop, disco and house, they produce twisted house jams that manage to remain raw and catchy at the same time. bold grooves and smooth vibes produ- ced with tape warmth and a singular pop appeal.

neville watson ends 2013, the year in which he released his debut album for creme organization, with a club-focussed 12 inch and the second in the dba special editions series. since remixing dba003, and thereby providing one of the most requested tracks in the labels history, it has only been a matter of time before the legendary uk producer joined the dba camp for a full 12 inch release. in keeping with the remit of the special editions sub-label, all three tracks are aimed squarely at the dancefloor, but relative to previous neville watson releases they tread a significantly more techno line, from the fused circuitry of crossing the is to the deeper strains of hot & heavy, and the twisted bassline assault of wired.

a word from label boss chris farrell: this is the new one on idle hands, from us producer strategy. i first came across paul dickows work when he released a 12 inch called *world house* on his own community library label back in 2005. it blew me away. in the ensuing years my friend duncan george who promoted bristol’s best electronic music night - under_score tried on numerous ocasions to book him for a bristol date but it never quite hapened due to the usual things that go wrong in club land. in those years duncan kept in touch with paul and last year suggested to him that it might be worth sending some tracks to me, which he did at the start of 2013… add a peverelist remix and you have the tracks here before you, dub reggae informed house and psychedelic 2 step vibes.

after three sold out releases on gamm the edit king the reflex is back with vol.4 in his re-vision series! this time around he goes slightly more rare groove-ish than before with three amazing re-edits.

club trax, is a new series of records created by djs, exclusively for djs. pressed in a limited amount, club trax is only available on vinyl and presents reworks of classic songs from the present and the past.
this second club trax outing brings the spotlight back on a 91 classic that moved many mountains and greatly participated in the building of underground culture worldwide and especially in the uk. the shamen was first founded as psychedelic indie rock band alone again or in the mid 80s before it quickly evolved as one of the leaders of the british acid house scene.

coming correct from deep within the london scene, jonno & tommo consummate their production partnership with a return to ornate to delve further into the hypnotic, soulful end of the house spectrum. close the door stretches across the a-side of their new release, the tough demeanour of the drum-heavy intro giving way to a serene pad arrangement, setting the tone for a starlit workout bolstered by an infectious hook of dusty vocal and subtle sonic decoration that accentuates the groove. small stone represents a more reflective mood on the flip, steadily feeding in reams of rhythm and melody before fully blossoming into an equally seductive, bumping jam laced with a perfectly pitched acid line that nestles into the cosy confines of the track.secret weapon of the capitals underground house fraternity, miles sagnia steps up with a simmering remix of small stone that keeps the tension high and the textures roaming through a decidedly futuristic soundscape, while still retaining the ethereal tone of the original.

the alias of welsh-born, california-based brian williams, lustmord first emerged as an associate of spk in the early 80s, before embarking on a solo career that has yielded such classics as heresy (1990), the place where the black stars hang (1994) and (with robert rich) stalker (1995). lustmord has also contributed to numerous hollywood films as music and sound designer, and collaborated with the likes of clock dva, chris & cosey, geir jenssen, the melvins, tool, aaron turner, monte cazazza and coils jhon balance. often seen to epitomize dark ambient, it would be more accurate to say that his work simply goes deeper, further, than conventional ambient dares, or is able, to go. half a decade in the making, the word as power is his new studio album and an exploration of ritual music without dogma.

golden age thinking was previously a three part, split lp but the three tracks featured on golden age thinking were to be an additional footnote to the project before the complete lp was released as a whole package digitally in june this year. written just before martin passed away in late-2012 the tracks featured on this, the 12 release, are the sort of timeless house music the duo shared a deep love of and the decision to release them was taken by giles and martins father.
